Recent Council Initiatives

1. Worked with Selwyn Elementary School's After Hours Program.

2. Started "Friendship without Borders" (which was combined with our Mustang Global Mentors initiative this past year) -- to help ESL students with homework, EOC test preparation, graduation requirements, etc., but also to form friendships with them. ESL students often get looked over at MP and don't feel comfortable in such a hectic environment as our school.

3. Organized a "A Walk for Rwanda" (in conjunction with the Echo Foundation) -- helped raise money for the library built in a Rwandan school called Nkondo Primary School the past year by the Echo Foundation.

4. Coordinated an "International Week" -- an annual event that showcases the different backgrounds of some of our Myers Park students, and also promotes global thinking. In past years, we've had food, dancing, and tents set up during lunch periods.

5. Started a "Ronald McDonald House Initiative" -- an initiative in which we collected tabs from soda cans to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald house.

6. Participated in Charlotte Crop Walk Imitative (in conjunction with Amnesty International) -- raised awareness and funds locally to fight hunger in the Charlotte community and around the world. As many as 5,000 people came out last year from 150 different congregations and organizations to walk to overcome hunger and poverty, and the Myers Park IB Council came out to make posters, and join in the walk.

7. Volunteered at AdamFest that helps to fund research for childhood cancer.

8. Volunteered at Leadership Institute (led by IBPAC)

9. Coordinated Animal Rescue Around the World -- the annual IB Freshman Council initiative where we bring in rescue animals during a lunch period, and collect pet supplies

10.Participated in a Park Clean Up with Parks and Rec

11. Participated in Mustang Focus -- an annual event that takes on a theme that is somehow impacting the world. This year's focus was on DISASTERS, both NATURAL and MAN-MADE. Participants had to design and manage a booth for Mustang Focus during lunch on a specific topic that is part of the theme.

12.Participated in the local SPIDA (Students Preventing and Informing on Drugs and Alcohol) Youth Summit

13. Encouraged IBPAC to purchase an on-line system for managing Myers Park IB Community Service Hours

14. Participated in the March of Dimes Campus Walk (with the March of Dimes Club, along with Amnesty International & Outward Bound) -- a campus walk on the Myers Park track. The money went towards helping moms have full-term pregnancies and researching to solve threats to the health of babies.
